Tooth sensitivity can create a huge discomfort and pain. This means that when you eat or drink hot or cold foods, you experience sharp pain. A worn-out enamel and roots that are exposed typically cause sensitivity. In other cases, it may be caused by a cavity, gum disease, or a cracked tooth. If you have sensitive teeth, here are a few things you can try to help with the sensitivity;
A saltwater rinse is a perfect home remedy for treating tooth sensitivity. Not only is salt a great disinfectant, but it is also great for reducing inflammation. For this method, add ½ a teaspoon of salt to the water, gargle in the mouth for at least 30 minutes, and then spit it out.
Fluoride is great for strengthening teeth. Your dentist may apply a fluoride varnish to the sensitive areas of your teeth. This will help to strengthen the enamel which will reduce the pain caused by sensitivity.
Your dentist may also recommend that you should use desensitizing toothpaste. The compounds in desensitizing toothpaste help to protect nerves from anything that can irritate them. After using the toothpaste a few times, the sensitivity will reduce significantly.
Although most people use hydrogen peroxide for teeth whitening, it can also help with sensitivity. It is a mild antiseptic; this means that we can use it as a rinse to heal gums and to even prevent inflammation. For this method you will need to; mix two teaspoons of hydrogen peroxide to warm water and then gargle in your mouth. After spitting, rinse your mouth with water.
If the sensitivity continues even after trying all other treatment options, it is likely that your dentist will recommend a root canal. Even though this may seem like an extreme treatment option, dentists consider it to be the most effective.
Most of these remedies may go a long way in helping you to deal with tooth sensitivity. However, should the sensitivity persist, it is best to contact your dentist who can further guide you on the best treatment option.
