How Can You Tell If You Have Cavities?

Posted on 9/11/2023 by Singing River Dentistry Madison
How Can You Tell If You Have Cavities?Cavities are common dental problems across the globe. They occur when bacteria infect your teeth, causing permanent damage to the enamel and dentin. With time, they can spread to the inner tissues leading to pain, tooth loss, and infections. Treating or preventing cavities is essential to avoid these consequences. However, this is possible only when you notice them at their earliest stages. Here are some signs to look for to know if you are having cavities:

Sensitivity to Cold or Hot Drinks or Food

One of the earliest signs of tooth cavities is sensitivity. When bacteria erode your enamel, it leaves your dentin exposed. This hard tissue has a high number of microscopic tubes with nerve endings. With enamel removed, the hot, cold, acidic, or sticky food and drinks reach the tooth nerves and cells. This creates a high sensitivity. If you are experiencing teeth sensitivity, you likely have some cavities.

Tooth Stains

Stains in your teeth can be a symptom of cavities. When they appear, they look like white spots but later turn darker as the condition advances to tooth decay. The stains can also be black or brown. Typically, they will appear on the teeth surfaces. Their appearance signifies enamel erosion. In case you notice this sign, you should consider a dental examination to check whether the cavities are developing, or the stains are due to another cause.

Excessive Tooth Pain

Are you experiencing tooth pain when eating or drinking hot, cold, or sweet elements? Toothache is a primary sign of cavities. The pain can be sudden or pops up when chewing food or sipping a drink. You will experience discomfort, making it hard to bite food. When you experience such pain, you will probably rush for painkillers. However, considering a dental checkup can be the best option. If you have one of the above signs, consider visiting our office for a professional examination.
