How to Treat and Prevent a Dry Mouth

Posted on 1/2/2024 by Weo Admin
Blue tooth brush with paste, floss, and mouth wash.A dry mouth occurs when you lack sufficient saliva to keep your mouth moist. This condition can happen to anyone. It often results from dehydration, certain medications, or an illness. Other causes include smoking, nerve damage, or radiotherapy. Without treatment, it can lead to dental issues. You may develop bad breath, tooth decay, or oral thrush. It can also increase the likelihood of gum disease. The following tips can help treat and prevent a dry mouth.

Stay Hydrated

If your mouth is dry, your body probably lacks sufficient water to stimulate saliva production. You can address this issue by drinking plenty of fresh, clean water. Acquire a water bottle and take regular sips throughout the day to stay hydrated.

Brush with High Fluoride Toothpaste or Mouth Wash

Fluoride contains compounds that trigger the gustatory reflex to produce more saliva, keeping your mouth moist. The best part is that saliva has antibacterial properties that can help prevent oral issues such as tooth decay.

Refrain from Alcoholic and Caffeinated Drinks

Excessive alcohol and caffeine consumption can cause dehydration. Also, avoid smoking since tobacco contains nicotine that inhibits saliva production.

Watch Your Diet

Some foods can increase dry mouth symptoms. These include spicy and salty meals and snacks. Salt is an absorbent, meaning it can suck out the water in your mouth, leaving it dry. Add broth and soups to your diet to increase your liquid intake and prevent a dry mouth.

Stay in a Cool and Moist Room

Extreme temperatures can cause dehydration, leading to a dry mouth. Invest in a humidifier or vaporizer to add more moisture to the air in your space. When relaxing outdoors, select a spot under a shade, away from direct sunlight.

Consult a Dentist

If dry mouth symptoms persist, consult a dentist or general practitioner. An oral expert can help you treat and manage a dry mouth, ensuring you are comfortable and safe from dental issues. Call us today to schedule an appointment with our dentist.
