Canker sores sound annoying, and they definitely live up to their name. In fact, canker sores can become quite red and painful, and for children, they can be torturous. If you have a child who is prone to canker sores, here are some treatments that may work for them.
What Are Canker Sores?
Canker sores are usually called aphthous ulcers. They are shallow lesions in your mouth, usually along your cheek, on your palate, or on your gums. Canker sores are usually bright red with a white center. They are flat or even concave. Canker sores are not contagious, unlike fever blisters that can be spread from person to person. They are more common in children, adolescents, and young adults. Canker sores can also be quite painful.
What Causes Canker Sores?
No one knows how or why canker sores occur. Some researchers think that age and genetics may play a role in who gets canker sores and who does not. So far, no one has found a bacteria or a virus that causes canker sores. Also, if you have food sensitivities or you have had trauma to the mouth, you are more likely to have canker sores.
How Are Canker Sores Treated?
Although canker sores are painful, luckily, there are treatments available for them. Many people use a saltwater or baking soda rinse to help diminish their canker sores. Also, if you suspect the canker sores may be caused by food, take the offending food away and avoid citrus or spicy foods. There are also over-the-counter pastes that can cut down on the pain and inflammation of canker sores.
If your child has severe canker sores, you may want to consult with our dentist. Dentists may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs, cooling gels, or steroids to help dry out and shrink the canker sores. If your child has frequent canker sores, you may want to give our office a call so that we can make an appointment for you and your child to talk to our dentist.
