Home Remedies for Wisdom Tooth Pain Relief

Posted on 6/15/2024 by Singing River Dentistry Madison
patient holding a glass of warm salt water rinseYour day may be thrown off when you have wisdom teeth pain, and you may look for quick relief. While seeing a dentist is always advisable, if the pain does not go away, there are still a few at-home treatments that might help you stay comfortable temporarily.

Salt Water Rinse

A salt water rinse is one of the most often advised at-home treatments for toothache. This warm, salty water rinse reduces bacteria and relieves sore gums. To clean the area surrounding the wisdom tooth, stir one teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm water, swirl it about in your mouth for thirty seconds, and then spit it out. To keep the area clean and pain-free, do this numerous times daily, especially after meals.

Clove Oil

Clove oil contains eugenol, a natural anesthetic and antibiotic, and it has been used to cure toothaches for ages. Dab the affected region with a cotton ball soaked in clove oil. Dilute pure clove oil with a carrier oil if needed because it can be intense.

Peppermint Tea Bags

The numbing qualities of peppermint can reduce swelling and soreness. Applying a cooled peppermint tea bag straight to the problematic area works. Peppermint has calming effects that help ease the afflicted area and offer short-term relief.

Ice Packs

Cold compresses can help reduce swelling and pain by numbing the area. Apply an ice pack wrapped in a cloth on the outside of your cheek where the discomfort is located. Never put ice directly on your skin or gums.

Garlic

Besides cooking, garlic provides therapeutic benefits, including the prevention of infections and pain management. Smash a garlic clove, add salt, and rub it straight onto the gum or tooth that is hurting.

Remember that they are only short-term fixes and cannot replace expert dental treatment. Please see your dentist immediately if your wisdom teeth discomfort is worsening or if you have a fever, a bad taste in your mouth, swelling that will not go away, or trouble breathing or swallowing.

Wisdom toothache should not prevent you from going about your everyday business. Call our dentist to discuss your symptoms and get the expert care you need to keep your smile healthy and pain-free!
