Single tooth replacement...what is the cost of a dental implant?

Posted on 9/2/2021 by Dr. Andrew Henninger

Dental implants cost too much, Right? Wrong?

Dental Implant with a crown versus a 3 unit bridge
I want to focus on three areas where the cost of a dental implant beats out the alternative option when replacing a single missing tooth.
•  Actual cost of treatment
•  Survival rate
•  Cost of complications or failures

The best two options for single tooth replacement that are not removable, aka fixed options, include a dental implant and crown - or 3 unit bridge.

How does the cost of treatment compare?

All things equal, the cost of a dental implant and crown vs 3 unit bridge is almost the same. In fact, the dental implant and crown is slightly less expensive in my office. This is a conscious decision because I strongly feel dental implants are the gold standard and best option for overall health when replacing a missing tooth. If price is what is driving the decision, I want to make sure my patients can make the best decision for their situation.

What is the survival rate for each treatment option?

Survival rate simply means the treatment is still in the mouth and functioning for the patient. There is a significant advantage in survival rate both in how many and how long for dental implants. Studies have shown a 95% survival rate at 13 years for dental implants. Meaning, after 13 years 95 out of 100 dental implants were still functioning for the patient. Compared to similar studies showing an 85% survival rate at 7 years for a 3 unit zirconia bridge. While both treatment options are good, being a numbers guy I'm choosing a dental implant every time.

What about the cost of complications or failures?

While the cost to deal with complications and failures can vary widely for both treatments and depend largely on what actually goes wrong, I would like to focus on one simple fact. If there is a complication or failure of a dental implant it only affects a single tooth. In contrast, if a 3 unit bridge has an issue it affects 3 teeth.

When focusing on cost of treatment, survival rate and cost of complications or failure it is clear that dental implants offer long term cost savings across the board.

I hope this article helps debunk the myth that dental implants are more expensive than alternative tooth replacement options.

I believe so much in dental implant treatment as the ideal option for tooth replacement I have spent most of 2021 advancing my implant training and now have the title of “Fellow in Implant Dentistry” from the Implant Pathway continuing education program and I have been a member of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry since 2019.
