Ways of Telling if You Have Bad Breath on Your Own

Posted on 7/19/2021 by Singing River Dentistry Madison
Ways of Telling if You Have Bad Breath on Your OwnOne of the worst realizations that can come during the day is when you notice that your breath stinks. It can happen even when we've brushed our teeth and done everything right that day. It's embarrassing and demoralizing, especially when you notice it after everyone else has. Or, you notice it after breathing inside of your mask, and you recoil from the sudden smell. Everyone has an off day, and so here are some tips that you can use to help tell you if your breath is bad on your own.

Without Tools

We all get put in situations where we fear we have bad breath but have no way to stop it or know for sure. Many times, this ends with awkward hand-over-mouth replies and unusually quiet communication for the rest of the day. One way to tell if your breath is bad is by licking the inside of your wrist, allowing it to dry, and then smelling it. You can also cup your hands over your mouth and exhale heavily; the goal is to get a good number of particles into your hands before then smelling the plume. This is what others are smelling when you are talking.

With Tools

These are usually better indicators of bad breath since they use tools that are already odorless (unlike your perfumed wrist or roast beef hands). If you have floss available, floss towards the back of your mouth and then smell the floss to see if there is an odor. If you have q-tips around, swab the back of your mouth and let it dry a moment before smelling it. Or, if there are cotton balls around, rub one on the inside of the mouth and let it dry before smelling it. All of these are known ways to test your breath without breathing on another person to double-check the smell. For more tips on how to keep your mouth smelling good and how to take care of it, give us a call, and we'd be happy to help.
