Reasons We Sometimes Need to Prescribe Antibiotics for Procedures
Posted on 6/7/2021 by Singing River Dentistry Madison
Antibiotics are medicines that fight infections caused by bacteria. The antibiotic kills the bacteria or inhibits the bacteria from growing and multiplying. Family doctors have prescribed antibiotics to treat strep throat and whooping cough. Antibiotics are also used for life-threatening conditions like sepsis. In our office, we also use antibiotics for dental procedures.
Antibiotics in Dentistry
If we detect signs of an acute or chronic infection in your mouth, we may prescribe antibiotics. If your infection is present with a fever or swelling, we will strongly consider using antibiotics. If you have an abscessed tooth, we will use antibiotics to help stop the spreading of bacteria to the rest of your body.
As a preventative measure, we prescribe antibiotics before dental procedures for patients with the highest risk of infection. If a patient has a prosthetic heart valve or has had a heart valve repaired with a prosthetic material, we will consider antibiotics before invasive dental procedures. Additionally, if the patient has a history of endocarditis or has had a heart transplant, we will also consider using antibiotics before the dental procedure. Lastly, if you have a compromised immune system and we need to do an invasive dental procedure, we will consider using antibiotics to control the spread of bacteria.
Careful Use of Antibiotics
When antibiotics are needed, we prescribe them. However, we understand that too many antibiotics are prescribed unnecessarily and misused. Unfortunately, this threatens the usefulness of these drugs. That is why we prescribe antibiotics only when we need them. We are happy to discuss our philosophy about using antibiotics as well as your personal health history when we are considering antibiotics. We want to make decisions that help you to thrive.
