Most Common Types of Periodontal Surgery Procedures You Need to Know

Posted on 11/8/2021 by Singing River Dentistry Madison
Most Common Types of Periodontal Surgery Procedures You Need to KnowPeriodontal surgeries are a type of procedure that treats the most severe cases of periodontal disease.

The term "periodontal" includes everything that surrounds the teeth and helps to support them, like tissue or bones. However, most of the time, people use it to refer to the gums.

We offer periodontal care and periodontal maintenance at our Madison, AL Singing River Dentistry location.

Periodontal surgeries are complex and sophisticated, and they require a qualified doctor. Here are some of the most common types of periodontal surgeries.

Gum Lift Surgery

This type of procedure includes gingivectomy and gingivoplasty.

The first one means cutting tissue from the gums. The surgeon can cut the deceased part, but it can also remove sane gum tissue.

This procedure is well-known, and our orthodontists perform it to eliminate excess tissue from the gums, among other cases.

During gingivoplasty, the surgeon will re-contour the gums to bring back their natural form. Both of them can have the same objectives, but they are not the same.

Mucogingival Surgery

This type of surgery is a little more complicated since it is a periodontal surgery, but it is also plastic surgery.

Our dentists will recommend it if you have advanced gum recession because of periodontitis or brushing your teeth too hard.

Gum recession occurs when the gum tissue pulls back, making the tooth surface bigger and vulnerable to bacteria growth.

Mucogingival surgery also has different techniques, like frenum repositioning, free gingival graft, and apically-repositioned flap.

Osseous Surgery

You will not need this type of surgery unless you are in the more advanced phases of periodontal disease.

Osseous surgery focuses on treating the bone destruction that can happen in periodontal disease, and its main objective is to restore the bones affected.
