Connection Between Stroke and Oral Health

Posted on 6/20/2022 by Singing River Dentistry Midtown
Connection Between Stroke and Oral HealthYou may not know this, but there is a strong connection between oral health and stroke. Research has shown that poor oral hygiene means people are at a higher risk for stroke. Here is what you should know about this connection.

What Is The Connection?

According to the CDC, stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States. When the flow of blood gets clocked from reaching the brain, the brain is deprived of oxygen, resulting in a stroke. It can happen due to a blockage, such as a clot or a bleed. While strokes can happen to anyone at any age, some risk factors can increase your chances of stroke. One of these risk factors is oral health. Studies say that people with poor oral hygiene are more likely to suffer from strokes. It is also due to the bacteria building up in the mouth, which can enter your bloodstream causing inflammation, which is a known risk for stroke. Therefore, it is imperative to practice healthy and right oral hygiene for your dental and overall health. Furthermore, if you have any other risk factors for stroke, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, it is even more essential to take care of your teeth and gums.

How Can You Improve Your Oral Hygiene?

There are several ways to enhance your dental hygiene and lower your stroke risk. First, you should brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. It would help if you also flossed daily to remove plaque and bacteria between your teeth. In addition, one should schedule daily checkups with the dentist. By taking these steps, you can improve your oral health and reduce your risk of stroke. Furthermore, you can also reduce your risk of other health problems, such as heart disease.

If you are concerned about your risk of stroke, talk to our dentists. They can help you assess your risks and recommend prevention and maintain good oral health.
