Should You Smoke After Tooth Extraction?

Posted on 6/6/2022 by Singing River Dentistry Madison
Should You Smoke After Tooth Extraction?Smoking cigarettes is terrible for your health. We all know that. But did you know that smoking cigarettes after tooth extraction can be just as bad - if not worse? Read on to know the risks and how to prevent them.

Risks of Smoking After Tooth Extraction

It is generally advised not to smoke following a tooth extraction. It is because smoking can delay the healing process and increase the risk of complications. One of the most severe risks of smoking after having a tooth extracted is the development of a dry socket. It occurs when the blood clot that forms in the extraction site is dislodged, exposing the underlying bone and nerves. Patients are at risk for infection, intense pain, and prolonged healing without blood clot protection. In addition, smoking can also increase the risk of developing an abscess, a pocket of pus that forms around the extraction site. Abscesses can be extremely painful and may require antibiotics or surgery to treat. Therefore, it is best to avoid smoking for at least a week after having a tooth extracted.

How to Care After Getting Tooth Extracted?

After having a tooth extracted, caring for your mouth is essential to promote healing and avoid complications. The first 24 hours after the procedure are typically the most uncomfortable, so it is essential to take things easy and avoid strenuous activity. You may also experience some bleeding and swelling, which can be controlled by placing a cold compress on the outside of your cheek. It is also essential to keep the extraction site clean, which can be done by gently rinsing your mouth with warm saltwater. Finally, eat soft foods and avoid using straws, as they can cause bleeding. Following these useful guidelines can help ensure a smooth recovery following a tooth extraction.
