What Causes Receding Gums?Receding gums is a condition where the flesh that makes your gums start to wear out. In most cases, the process is not painful and might only be noticed by observation. The occurrence of receding gums should be of concern since it may lead to serious complications. In most cases, receding gums end in tooth loss and other complications. There are two main causes of receding gums and other uncommon causes. These causes are as follows:

Old Age-Related Factors

One of the common causes of receding gums is aging. Some people start experiencing wear and tear in their teeth as they age. The main causes of the problem in old people are genetic disposition and the size of the gums. While it is okay for old people to experience some wear in their gums, you should make efforts to protect your gums from wear and tear.

Gum Disease

The second and the most common cause of receding gums in all people is gum disease. This is a condition caused by infection under the gums. When a person's gums get infected, they may get swollen and painful or they may start losing mass without other symptoms. If you experience gum bleeding, swelling and pain regularly, you need to get checked by a dentist for gum disease. Gum disease can be very dangerous and potentially threatening to your teeth.

Smokers are at risk of suffering many conditions one of them being receding gums. Besides the obvious known facts such as lung cancer caused by tobacco, smoking is a big threat to your dental formula. Receding gums is a sign that your involvement in smoking might be leading to other problems. Further, smoking can also lead to tooth decay and complete loss of your teeth.
