Dental Exam Madison, AL
Regular dental exams are a crucial part of overall oral hygiene health and maintenance. While regular brushing and flossing are essential for daily maintenance, a regular dental exam can discover problems that would otherwise be missed. Exams should be conducted on a regular basis in order to prevent serious teeth and gum issues. Our staff of professionals at Singing River Dentistry are available to schedule your next dental exam.

Overall Purpose
While the primary purpose of a dental exam is to ensure there are no major dental issues, such as cavities or gum disease, a proper dental exam can also serve to prevent other issues, both in oral care and overall health. For example, some diseases, such as arthritis and diabetes, can sometimes show up in the mouth first; regular dental exams can spot these issues early and, if spotted, our staff can recommend you see your doctor.
Preparing for the Exam and What to Expect
During the exam, our staff will conduct a thorough cleaning as well as inspect your teeth and gums for signs of such things as cavities and gum disease. Our staff will also evaluate your potential risk of developing other dental issues as well as checking your mouth, face and neck for any abnormalities that may be cause of concern. As needed, additional procedures, such as X-rays, may be conducted during the exam.
During the exam, our staff will inquire about any health problems you may have and medications you take to discuss the affects they may have on your oral health. For example, those with diabetes are often at a higher risk of gun disease. Additionally, some medications can lead to dry mouth, which can increase the potential risk of things like tooth decay. Those with arthritis, who have a harder time brushing, can learn new ways to brush – such as inserting the handle into a rubber ball – or be recommended to use an electric toothbrush.
Diet and lifestyle choices, such as tobacco and caffeine use, can have a significant impact on your oral health and should be discussed openly with our staff.
Other services provided during the course of the exam include examining your teeth to determine your need for tooth repair or replacement, the removal of any build-up or stains, and the demonstration of proper brushing, flossing and cleaning techniques for either your teeth or dentures. In addition, our staff will discuss with you any cosmetic improvements that may be beneficial.
Those with dentures or bridges should also make sure to schedule regular dental exams to ensure they are fitting properly and to determine if any adjustments are needed. Special care is often needed to properly maintain replacement teeth and our staff would be happy to discuss with you proper maintenance techniques in order to ensure their stability and longevity.
