Dental crowns are a restorative treatment option used for several reasons. How is a Crown Placed?
Generally, a crown placement takes two office visits: one to fit the molding for the crown, and one to place and seal the crown. First, our dentists will prepare your mouth by examining your teeth and gums for any other issues that need to be treated. They will then remove the outer area of the tooth, including the tops and all four sides. All decay and debris are removed from the tooth.
Our dentists will take an impression of your teeth and bite either by taking a digital scan or by using a putty-like substance to create a mold. This provides a model in which the crown will replicate. If your procedure takes more than one office visit, our professionals will fit a temporary crown until your next visit. Once your crown is complete, our dentists will fit in the expertly crafted crown and seal it with a special cement.
What is the Proper Care for a Crown?
Crowns are like normal teeth after they are sealed. They should be brushed, flossed, and rinsed on a routine basis just like your natural teeth. It is important to remember, however, that crowns can crack, break, and stain just like your natural teeth.
To prevent further damage, it is always best to avoid overly sticky or hard foods, and to avoid staining food like red wine and coffee. Other than daily, routine oral hygiene upkeep, you should continue to have regular oral exams to monitor the success of the crown and prevent future needs for a crown.
