Hand holding a dental laser like those used at Singing River DentistryLaser technology is a reliable tool our dentists use to efficiently treat a number of problems and issues in your mouth and smile. The use of lasers in conjunction with other tools, such as a dental drill, can help reduce pressure, cause less pain, and reduce the amount of bleeding or swelling during a particular procedure. Our professionals at Singing River Dentistry use laser dentistry to provide the most comfortable oral exam or procedure as possible.

What is Laser Dentistry?

Laser, or "light amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation," has evolved over the past decades to be a very successful tool in dentistry. This tool emits a light energy that is highly concentrated into a small beam. This beam can then treat many different oral conditions. Lasers can offer a more comfortable solution than the use of traditional dental tools such as a dental drill or air abrasion instrument. Lasers can be used for treating moth hard and soft tissue in your mouth.

How Does Laser Dentistry work?

Laser dentistry is a tool with many functions. The laser emits light energy in a highly concentrated ray. The light that is produced from the laser causes a reaction when it his soft or hard tissue. The reaction caused by the laser actually allows the laser to remove or shape the tissue it is in contact with.

Additionally, if our dentists use laser dentistry in a surgical procedure, the energy the laser produces is used as a cutting instrument on the tissue. While if it is used in teeth whitening procedures the laser will act as a heat source and enhances the bleaching solution used in the procedure.

When is Laser Dentistry Used?

Since the introduction of lasers into normal dentistry, it has evolved to treating a number of different issues. Lasers are used when treating a tooth or gum hypersensitivities. Lasers can detect cavities at an early stage and treat the tooth decay before it spreads. It is also used to treat gum disease and reshape the gum to remove bacteria or other decaying debris.

Lasers are a common tool in teeth whitening procedures and can often speed up the entire procedure. The laser activates the peroxide bleaching solution used in teeth whitening that makes the procedure much faster.

Lastly, lasers are a key component in oral cancer screening. They can be used to remove small tissue from your mouth that can be further examined for evidence of oral cancer. If our dentists find lesions in your mouth, or if you are suffering from canker sores, the laser can remove both issues.

Unfortunately, laser dentistry does have its drawbacks. It cannot fully replace the need for a dental drill, it must work in conjunction with it. It also cannot be used when a tooth already has a filling.
