What is a Sport Mouthguard?
A sport mouthguard is a mouth protector, or a device worn over your teeth while you practice or compete in sports that involve the possibility of injury to your head or face. The device is typically worn over your top set of teeth only. They should be worn at all practices and competitions. It is a piece of athletic equipment that should be considered for anyone playing in contact sports to protect their teeth and overall oral health.
These mouth protectors are also a good preventative measure if you are wearing braces or other fixed dental appliances like a dental bridge. Sports like football, hockey, or soccer have the danger of flying balls or bodily contact. This isn't an exclusive list, but they are certainly the most common sports our dentists recommend for getting sports mouthguards.
Different Types of Mouthguards
Our dentists will outline the three different types of sport mouthguards available for you, and work with you to decide which is the best fit for you. You comfort and the level of protection provided by the mouthguard are both equally important when deciding which mouthguard is the right choice.
A stock mouthguard is a preformed and a ready-to-wear mouthguard that is purchased at pharmacies, sports stores, or many general stores without a prescription. Since it is ready to wear, they are not a custom fit to your unique mouth and can lead to discomfort while wearing them. Additionally, they may not provide the full protection like other types of mouthguards.
A step above stock mouthguards, are called Boil and Bite mouthguards. These also come in a pre-formed shape, however, the material in these mouthguards is easily manipulated. The shape is altered by boiling in water, then biting into the warm plastic to form a more customized fit.
The highest level of mouthguard, and the most recommended is a custom-made mouthguard. These are fit in our office by our dentist. They ensure not only the fit is correct, but the amount of protection is provided at all points of your mouth is exact.
How long do mouthguards last?
Ideally, a mouthguard should be replaced after every season. The mouthguard can wear down over time and lose its protective effect. Additionally, adolescents who are still growing should replace them regularly as to not interrupt the natural growth patterns of their mouths. You should store your mouthguard in a ventilated hard shell container to prevent it from drying out, but also protecting it from any lingering bacteria.
